Roll Painting project: an invitation to think creatively about sustanability and recycling

The idea of creating a long painting in abstract expressionist style by using decommissioned cotton hand towel rolls was first tested by Alexander Borissov in Herrliberg, Switzerland in autumn 2012.

The rolls were donated to the project by the Swiss branch of CWS-boco, the internationally leading provider of ecologically friendly hygiene solutions. 100% cotton-made, each roll can be washed up to 100 times in its lifetime and is 100% recyclable. Cotton rolls replace paper napkins - this saves trees and reduces carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

The aim of the roll painting artwork is to draw public attention to the importance of responsible consumption and recycling and to encourage people to utilize better recycling opportunities.

From February 2013 Alexander Borissov hired a studio in an industrial building in Erlenbach, Switzerland which become the main place for the creation of the roll paintings. Alex makes pieces at other international locations as he travels.

The abstract-expressionist painting is executed in action painting technique by energetically applying drops of colour on canvas. This creates unique and intriguing pattern of lines and splashes. The painting is currently 1 km 800 metres long and is growing.

Work in progress: Florence, Italy

Roll Painting project: the new phase

From March 2013 the Roll Painting project has spilled over the national borders of Switzerland.
In March 2013 Alexander Borissov has visited Florence, Italy by invitation of LINEA Spazio Arte Contemporanea to create a series of artworks for the exhibition Small Wonders LINEA have been organizing in association with Florence Biennale.

The visit and the artistic method were highlighted by the local web magazine teladoiofirenze (in Italian).

To emphasize the message that taking care of sustainability and recycling can and indeed should become a daily routine Alexander Borissov has worked simultaneously on the creation of the artworks for the Small Wonders exhibition and on the completion of yet another roll for the Roll Painting project.

Another roll has been recently completed in Austria in the nature resort on the ground of the Hotel Rossbad.

Advancing the Roll Painting project in different countries underpins the approach that sustainability requires involvement of people beyond national borders.

Once completed, the individual rolls will be joined together to form one long painting running many hundreds of meters. By now pieces of the long painting has now been painted in many countries, including Austria, Brazil, Italy, Maldives, Sweden, Switzerland, Russia and the UK.
